Building a Duchy to the Greater Glory of God The Jesuits and the Farnesian Educational Policy in Parma (1539-1604)

Abstract

This paper focuses on how the Farnesian Dukes of Parma (from Pierluigi to Ranuccio I) used their relationship with the Society of Jesus in order to impose themselves within a still medieval social framework that initially tried to resist the new power balance. The cornerstone of the Farnese’s policy was the entrustment of the higher classes’ education to the Society of Jesus. The Jesuits ran the college of San Rocco, the restored University, and finally one of the first and most important Seminaria Nobilium (1604) in Europe. Thanks to the Jesuits, the Farnese succeeded in centralizing power, overwhelming the ancient relationships of vassalage, and refashioning the overall functioning of the local society.

La construcción de un ducado a la mayor gloria de Dios. Los jesuitas y la política de Educación Farnesian en Parma (1539-1604)

Este documento se centra en cómo el Farnesian duques de Parma (de Pierluigi a Ranuccio I) utiliza su relación con la Compañía de Jesús, para imponerse dentro de un marco social todavía medieval que inicialmente trató de resistir el nuevo equilibrio de poder. La piedra angular de la política del Farnese fue la encomienda de la educación de las clases superiores a la Compañía de Jesús. Los jesuitas llegaron al colegio de San Rocco, la Universidad restaurada y, finalmente, uno de los primeros y más importante Seminaria Nobilium (1604) en Europa.
