Abstract

Rome 1566. Jesuit colleges at the origins of Baroque theatre

The Jesuit taste for Baroque theatre appeared as early as their colleges were sprouting up all over the world. The origins of Jesuit school theatre have usually been dated back to 1566, when a Saul was performed at Collegium Germanicum. Extant manuscripts prove that this play was authored by Miguel Venegas, the celebrated Coimbra College Jesuit playwright, and that Jesuit playwriting tradition was inherited by Francesco Benci, the beloved pupil of Marc-Antoine Muret, who taught at La Sapienza, and by Bernardino Stefonio, Benci’s pupil. This paper aims at retracing this tradition, showing the genealogy that runs from Collège de Guyenne through Coimbra to Rome and further to Baroque tragedy.

Los colegios de la Compañía en los orígenes del teatro barroco.

El gusto por el teatro barroco jesuita apareció desde el momento en que los colegios jesuitas comenzaron a extenderse en el mundo.
Los orígenes del teatro de el colegio jesuita se fija normalmente a 1566, cuando Saúl estuvo representada en el Collegium Germanicum. Fuentes manuscritas demuestran que este trabajo fue ejecutado por Miguel Venegas, el famoso dramaturgo del colegio de los jesuitas de Coimbra, y esta tradición teatral fue heredado por el jesuita Francesco Benci, el discípulo favorito de MarcAntoine Muret, que enseñó en la Sapienza, y Bernardino Stefonio, discípulo de Benci.
