Abstract

A didactic Protestant drama and its Jesuit version: the double life of Sixt Birck’s Judith

The Reformed playwright Sixt Birck composed during the 1530’s, during his appointment as Rektor des Pädagogiums in Basel, several Biblical dramas in German to be represented before the city public. Later Birck went back to his native Augsburg as Rektor des Gymnasiums St. Anna and translated his dramas in Latin. A 1544 printed copy of his Latin Judith, presumably from the Fugger library, entered the archives of the Munich Jesuit college, founded in 1559. The copy has been carefully corrected to be per-formed on Jesuit stage, giving us a unique insight on the political and pedagogical meanings of college theatre, and on the reuse of Protestant dramas by the stronger religious enemies of the Refor-mation.

El dramaturgo reformista Sixt Birck compuso en la década de 1950, durante su designación como Rektor des Pädagogiums en Basel, diversos dramas bíblicos en alemán para ser representados ante el público de la ciudad. Posteriormente Birck volvió a su nativo Augsburg como Rektor des Gymnasiums St. Anna y tradujo sus dramas al latín. Una copia impresa de 1544 de su Judith en latín, presumiblemente de la biblioteca Fugger, ingresó a los archivos del colegio jesuita de Múnich, fundado en 1559. La copia ha sido cuidadosamente corregida para ser representada en escenario jesuita, aportándonos una visión única sobre los sentidos pedagógicos y políticos del colegio teatral y el uso de dramas protestantes por los enemigos religiosos más fuertes de la Reforma.
